Advancing Scholarship in Islamic Law and Society

Pakungwati Journal of Islamic Law and Society (PJILS) welcomes original and academically rigorous scholarship that contributes to the theoretical development and practical understanding of Islamic law and its relationship with society. The journal provides a scholarly forum for exploring Islamic legal norms, institutions, practices, interpretations, and transformations within diverse social, cultural, political, economic, and legal contexts.

PJILS particularly encourages critical, interdisciplinary, comparative, and context-sensitive scholarship that engages with different legal traditions, institutions, communities, and social settings. Contributions may examine Islamic law as a normative legal tradition as well as a living and evolving social phenomenon interacting with state law, customary norms, social change, and contemporary questions of justice.

Scholarly Orientation

The journal welcomes contributions from Islamic legal studies, law and society, socio-legal studies, legal anthropology, sociology of law, political and constitutional studies, gender studies, comparative law, and other relevant disciplines. Research addressing the interaction between Islamic law, state law, customary law, legal pluralism, human rights, gender justice, religious authority, and social transformation is particularly encouraged.

Although PJILS gives particular attention to Indonesia and Southeast Asia, the journal welcomes scholarship from Muslim societies and legal systems worldwide, especially studies that offer comparative, transnational, and theoretically significant perspectives.
