Article Publication Process

Article Publication Process

Pakungwati Journal of Islamic Law and Society (PJILS)

All manuscripts submitted to Pakungwati Journal of Islamic Law and Society (PJILS) undergo a structured editorial and peer-review process designed to ensure academic quality, originality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, and relevance to the journal's focus and scope. Publication decisions are based on the scholarly merit of the manuscript and the recommendations of editors and peer-reviewers.

Publication Workflow

1

Manuscript Submission

Authors submit their manuscripts through the PJILS Online Journal System (OJS). Authors are required to complete all submission metadata, upload the manuscript, provide relevant author information, and ensure compliance with the journal's Author Guidelines, focus and scope, citation style, and publication ethics requirements.

2

Preliminary Editorial Screening

The Editorial Team conducts an initial screening to assess the manuscript's conformity with the journal's focus and scope, academic quality, originality, structure, language, citation style, and technical requirements. Manuscripts that do not meet the minimum editorial requirements may be returned to the authors for correction or declined without external peer review.

3

Similarity and Ethical Screening

Manuscripts may be screened using similarity-detection software and other editorial checks to identify possible plagiarism, duplicate publication, inappropriate citation practices, or other potential ethical concerns. Manuscripts involving serious ethical problems may be rejected at this stage.

4

Assignment to Handling Editor

Manuscripts that pass the preliminary screening are assigned to an editor whose academic expertise is relevant to the subject of the manuscript. The handling editor evaluates the manuscript and selects appropriate peer-reviewers.

5

Double-Blind Peer Review

Each manuscript is normally evaluated by at least two independent reviewers through a double-blind peer-review process, in which the identities of both authors and reviewers are concealed. Reviewers assess the manuscript's originality, theoretical contribution, methodological soundness, analytical depth, use of sources, organization, relevance, and overall contribution to Islamic law and society scholarship.

6

Editorial Decision

Based on the reviewers' reports and the handling editor's assessment, the manuscript may receive one of the following decisions:

  • Accept without revision;
  • Minor revision;
  • Major revision;
  • Resubmit for review; or
  • Reject.
7

Author Revision

Authors receiving a revision decision are expected to revise the manuscript carefully and submit a detailed response to the reviewers and editors. The response should explain how each comment has been addressed and, where a recommendation has not been followed, provide a clear academic justification.

8

Re-Evaluation of Revised Manuscript

The revised manuscript is evaluated by the handling editor and, where necessary, may be returned to the original reviewers for further assessment. Additional rounds of revision may be requested until the manuscript meets the journal's academic and editorial standards.

9

Final Acceptance

A manuscript is formally accepted only after it has satisfactorily addressed the substantive comments of reviewers and editors and has met the journal's scholarly, ethical, and technical requirements. The Editor-in-Chief or designated editor makes the final publication decision.

10

Copyediting

Accepted manuscripts undergo copyediting to improve linguistic accuracy, consistency, citation formatting, transliteration, references, headings, tables, and overall presentation. Editorial corrections should not alter the substance of the author's argument without consultation with the author.

11

Layout and Typesetting

The manuscript is formatted according to the PJILS publication template. This stage includes final page layout, typography, tables, figures, article metadata, pagination where applicable, and preparation of the publishable electronic version.

12

Author Proofreading

The corresponding author may receive the final proof for checking before publication. At this stage, authors should normally limit corrections to typographical errors, factual inaccuracies, formatting issues, or other minor production errors. Major substantive revisions are generally not permitted after acceptance.

13

Publication

After final approval, the article is published online as part of the relevant PJILS issue. Published articles receive complete bibliographic information and, where applicable, a Digital Object Identifier (DOI). Articles are then prepared for dissemination, indexing, archiving, and long-term accessibility through the journal's publication platform and relevant scholarly databases.

Editorial Independence

The final decision to accept or reject a manuscript rests with the Editorial Team and is based on academic merit, reviewer evaluations, compliance with publication ethics, and relevance to the journal. Editorial decisions are made independently of the author's institutional affiliation, nationality, gender, religious background, seniority, or other considerations unrelated to scholarly quality.

Important Note: Submission of a manuscript does not guarantee publication. Manuscripts may be declined at any stage where substantial problems relating to academic quality, relevance, research integrity, publication ethics, or compliance with journal requirements are identified.

Pakungwati Journal of Islamic Law and Society is committed to maintaining a fair, transparent, rigorous, and accountable publication process that supports high-quality scholarship in Islamic law and society.
